Uptown climate futures:

A workshop series and anthology

Are you worried about climate change? Curious about how to get involved in sustainability locally?

We were too! That’s why we designed Uptown Climate Futures, a welcoming, conversational workshop series designed to build community, spark meaningful discussions, and amplify the voices of BIPOC youth (ages 15-35) in Uptown Toronto. Through deep discussions, storytelling, creative exploration, and interactive activities, we’ll explore themes of social and environmental sustainability—culminating in a published anthology featuring participants' writing and artwork.

Each session will focus on a different aspect of climate justice, creating space for personal reflection, collective visioning, and action.

Session themes:

  • Climate Emotions

  • Diaspora & (Im)Migration

  • (Re)Indigenizing

  • Climate Crisis Response

  • Governance & Democracy

  • Climate Change-making

Expect rich conversations, a fully catered, warm meal, hands-on activities, and cozy salon vibes in a local coffee shop in Uptown Toronto.

Whether you attend one or all, you’ll be part of a growing community of changemakers shaping the future.

uptown climate futures is a collaboration between the climateverse and uptown climate conversations.

😶 How does climate change make you feel

In this first session, we’ll explore the emotional landscape of the climate crisis—unpacking the grief, anxiety, and hope that shape our experiences. We’ll examine how current societal structures limit our capacity to process these emotions and discuss how they might be reimagined.

The session will close with a collective visioning activity, imagining new systems of care that could better support both us and future generations

🌍 How does climate change shape migration and displacement? What does it mean to belong in a changing world?

In this session, we’ll center our own migration stories (personal or ancestral) and our responsibilities both to our ancestral and our present homes. We'll explore the intersections of climate change, migration, and diaspora and examine how climate change impacts people differently across borders.

Through storytelling and mapping exercises, we’ll connect our personal histories to global environmental shifts—building a deeper understanding of climate migration and resilience.

Our closing collective visioning activity will seek to imagine new possibilities for borders and migration that could better support both us and future generations

🔥 How can our ancestral lineages inform our responsibilities to Truth and Reconciliation?

Continuing the thread of Session 2’s focus on our connections to ancestral indigenous lands, we’ll center this week’s conversation on our relationships and responsibilities to the lands and peoples of Turtle Island, where we call home today. With Indigenous-led knowledge sharing and facilitation, we’ll explore what it means to respectfully foster belonging on these lands while serving as allies to Indigenous sovereignty in what is currently Canada.

Our closing collective visioning activity will seek to imagine new possibilities for Land Back, Truth and Reconciliation, and our relationship to land amidst a climate crisis

⚡ What does an effective and equitable response to the climate crisis look like?

From a global perspective, we’ll explore our responsibilities to the rest of the world in respect to the climate crisis, from offering sanctuary to those impacted and/or displaced by climate change, to sharing resources like water and food with other more severely impacted countries. We’ll also discuss conflict and war, both as a source of increasing GHG emissions, and as a result of climate collapse.

Finally, we’ll ground this global conversation in the potential for local community crisis response and what we can learn from past and present movements to better prepare for the realities of climate change.

Our closing collective visioning activity will explore the systems of adaptation and resilience we can build to ensure no one is left behind.

🗳 Who gets to shape climate policy? How do we build more just decision-making structures?

This session unpacks the relationship between climate justice and governance—exploring how policies are made, who has power, and what a truly democratic response to climate change could look like. We’ll analyze economic systems of governance, and explore alternative governance models, including the possibilities for representation of youth, nature and future generations.

Our closing collective visioning activity will explore the kinds of governance structures and climate policies we can build to ensure no one is left behind.

🌱 What is your role in the movement?

In our final session, we’ll focus on transforming ideas into tangible action. Whether through storytelling, activism, community projects, or policy advocacy, we’ll explore different ways to drive change and find our own roles within the movement. We’ll also unpack what it means to live sustainably under an unsustainable system.

Through a futures visioning exercise, we’ll craft personal and collective climate action roadmaps—identifying next steps to continue building momentum beyond the workshop series.
